Fixxer - The Boston Experience, Woking, 18th February 2001
Fixxer take to the stage looking like they mean business. Female drummer Lorraine Pankhurst ready and waiting behind a huge arsenal of drums, bassist Roy Alexander surveying the hungry looking crowd like a general going to war, guitarist Chris Newman standing, weapon in hand - poised for action and menacing vocalist/guitarist Brad Stephens cold and cool. Billed as "heavy metal" they certainly look the part and seem perfectly at ease - and so they are as Brad introduces themselves and the first number - Comfortably satisfied. This track is reminiscent of Therapy?'s "Stop It You're Killing Me" and is the perfect start to the set -it's loud, it's raw - it's disturbingly good. Second track "Aim To Please" is dedicated tonight to those members of the audience who like it "doggy style" (is this a new form of hip-hop?). The track is a sombre, dark, hard-driving number and is certainly popular with the in-house natives tonight. Somewhere in the crowd a voice pleads "go on - Enter Sandman - you know you want to!" and the reply "maybe later" is barely heard before the group beat the audience back into submission with "Temple Of The Sun". The fourth song of the set (apart from being about "a dirty little tart") is much more punky, though catchy as ever, however the next number "I Want Out" is an epic. The track that starts out quite gently, but soon builds into a huge wall of emotion and sound - very gripping. The final number comes oh too quickly - a blast through green day's "Basket Case" rounds off a superb performance. They don't think it's all over, but alas the audience are left with no encore. That's part of the trick to a good live show - keep 'em hungry. Fixxer - they came, they saw, they rocked. |
